Area Information

The county was organized in 1833 and named for Kazimierz Pulaski, a Polish patriot who died fighting in the American Revolution. Pulaski County's earliest settlers were the Quapaw, Missouria and Osage Indians. After the Lewis and Clark Expedition of the early 1800s, European settlers came to the area, many from Kentucky, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Waynesville began as trading post for settlers and trappers. Officially established in 1833, this community was named for Revolutionary War hero, Gen. "Mad Anthony" Wayne. It is the oldest town in Pulaski County. Most of the original native population in our area came by wagon train from all across the southern U.S.

St. Robert's origin stems from the early days of World War II. After construction of the Fort Leonard Wood Army Base 1941, the population swelled in the region. St. Robert was chartered as a village in October 1951 and named for the first Catholic Church built there.

Our region gets roughly 41 inches of rain per year and 17 inches of snowfall. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is approximately 96. On average, there are 197 sunny days per year in our community. The July high is around 90 degrees and the January low is 20.

Waynesville, St. Robert and the Fort Leonard Wood Army Installation, along with their surrounding rural areas, are served by the Waynesville R-VI School District, which is by far the largest in the county.

Waynesville Regional Airport at Forney Field serves the community with air service. Even though its located on Fort Leonard Wood, it is jointly run by the cities of Waynesville and St. Robert. The airport is available for use by private pilots and scheduled commercial passenger service.

Pulaski County offers awesome fishing opportunities, scenic overlooks, walking trails, hunting, float trips in canoes, rafts, kayaks, inner tubes, golf, geocaching and more. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure-hunting game played by adventure-seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers (called geocaches) and share the experiences online.

Our region boasts many rivers and creeks. The Gasconade, Big Piney and Roubidoux (which is home to Roubidoux Spring Cave) are all known for some of the best smallmouth bass and trout fishing in the state.

Historic Route 66 runs through the center of Waynesville adding charm and nostalgia to the town. The "Main Street of America" was commissioned November 11, 1926, and weaves through eight states, from Chicago, Ill., to Santa Monica, Calif.

Our county also has many golf courses, resorts, campgrounds, parks and so much more.
